Q and A with the Head Coach of the Volleyball Team, Robert Lombardi
Q1: Coach Lombardi, How long have you been coaching volleyball and why do you continue to coach the sport?
A1: I have coached volleyball for more than 30 years. I love the game because it is a true team sport. Players must use their individual skills within the team concept to be successful. Even more importantly, I love the kids at FCHS. Most of them have never played the game competitively before, so it is extremely rewarding to see how the girls grow and mature as players in our FCHS program.
Q2: Why should students consider playing volleyball for FCHS?
A2: We give student athletes the opportunity to play an exciting, fast-paced game while representing FCHS as members of the volleyball team. In addition, student athletes electing to play volleyball will be joining a team with a winning tradition at FCHS. Our players develop pride in themselves and the team.
Q3: What if a student has never played before? Is there a place for that student-athlete?
A3: Many members never played the game before joining the team at FCHS. We welcome new players. With three teams; freshmen, junior varsity and varsity, we have a team for every level of skill.
Q4: What will playing volleyball teach a student athlete?
A4: Volleyball teaches athletic skill, coordination, resolve, endurance, teamwork and sportsmanship. If any of those elements are overlooked, the team cannot be successful in competition. My coaches and I will insist that all our players learn these fundamental and essential basics of the game.
Q5: What are the goals for the varsity this season?
A5: Our goal for the varsity is learn the basics I mentioned before and use those fine points to make a run at another National District championship.
Q6: What are the commitments that every player must make to be a member of the FCHS volleyball team?
A6: We expect every player to have a positive attitude, to come to and work hard in practice, to cooperate with her teammates and coaches and be committed to having a winning season.
Q7: What are your expectations of the returning varsity players?
A7: We expect our returning varsity volleyball players to set good examples for and mentor our new members. They know how hard it is to compete for a district championship. They understand that every player must go 100% on every point, no matter what the score. I expect those players to convey that understanding to every member of the FCHS Volleyball Team.
Q8: Who are your team leaders for this season?
A8: I expect all my varsity players to be team leaders, but especially Casey Davenport, Judy Bonilla and Harmonie Mulumba.
Q9: If a student-athlete or parent wants to talk to you about anything related to the team, how should they contact you?
A9: Anyone who wants to contact me may do so at FCHS. My room number is 208 and my e-mail is [email protected].
