Q and A with the Head Coach of the Cross Country Team, Rebecca Coffman

Q1: Coach Coffman, why do you coach cross country at FCHS?

A1: Cross country and track, along with my coaches, had such a positive influence on me in high school and college. It allowed me to believe in myself and work hard to accomplish my goals in running and in life and to never quit or give up. I feel cross country has been a huge factor in getting me where I am today. I want to be able to instill that same sense of accomplishment in Falls Church HS cross country student athletes.

Q2: Why should students consider running x-country for FCHS?

A2: Running is like a long-term investment. It is a sport with longevity; something athletes may continue to do for the rest of their lives. Running helps students become well-conditioned athletes and contributes to their good health. For those athletes participating in winter and spring sports, cross country is a great way to get in shape. It is also great way to make new friends. Last, but not least, running is fun and a great way to represent your school.

Q3: What if a student has never run cross country before?

A3: Every runner started somewhere with their first run. I encourage everyone to come out for cross country. It takes time and commitment, but for student athletes who are willing to work hard, it provides a very rewarding experience.

Q4: What will joining the x-country team teach a student-athlete?

A4: I believe cross country teaches its members how to work for the good of the team. Cross country is not a structured sport like basketball or soccer, but it is a team sport in many ways. Cross country runners learn to become mentally strong and physically tough. I think the best lesson that cross country teaches is that with determination, resolve and tenacity, student athletes can overcome obstacles and achieve success as runners and in the classroom.

Q5: If a student-athlete wants to talk to you about trying out for the team, how should they contact you?

A5: Any student interested in running can come up to the FCHS track to see me. I am there from 4:15-6:15 or later or they can email me at [email protected] or call me at 571-276-9631.

Q6: What are the goals for the varsity this season?

A6: Our team goal is to make an impact this season in the National District by placing in the top 3 at the district meet.

Q7: What is the commitment that every runner must make to be a member of the FCHS x-country team?

A7: Every runner needs to realize that this sport takes hard work and dedication. Yes, there are going to be bad days; days that you don’t think you can run any farther or take another step. But if you come to practice every day and give it everything you’ve got, you will learn you can run farther and you will accomplish your personal goals and realize your full potential.

Q8: What are your expectations of the returning varsity runners?

A8: I expect the returning varsity runners to set an example for our new and younger members. Our experienced runners are expected to give the new and younger runners a team they can respect and admire; that will encourage them to work a little harder each day so that one day they may become a varsity runner. On an individual level, I expect the varsity to continue where they left off last season. I expect them to be able to run the times they ran the end of last season at the beginning of this season and continue to get their times down throughout the season.

Q9: Who are your team leaders for this season?

A9: We are looking for leadership from Kevin Cornett, Anthony Phythyon, Annie Long and Linda Conway. Everyone should expect great things from junior, Kevin Cornett, who should have an excellent season this year after attending 2 cross country camps this summer at VT and one in Rhode Island. After a successful spring track season, senior, Annie Long should also have an amazing year.
