Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Washington-Lee

Game Date
Nov 28, 2017
Score
JAGUARS: 29
WASHINGTON-LEE: 32

For the second straight season the Lady Jags opened their varsity basketball season against the Lady Generals of Washington-Lee HS, and for the second straight year Falls Church was outscored by their opponent -- this one at home in a back-and-forth contest that ended with the home team losing by three points at the final buzzer. The Lady Jags defense played soundly--certainly well enough to win--but the offense was not nearly as sharp.

After an incredible number of errant shots, Falls Church finally registered its only field goal of the 1st quarter when Junior guard Sierra Kennard hit a "3" in the closing minute which was still good enough to keep pace with W-L as the frame ended with the score of 4 to 6. The Lady Jags put up only two baskets and three free throws in the second quarter with sophomore point guard Amari Faust scoring six of those seven points.  The Jaguar defense bunkered up the Generals by holding them to five total points for the frame and sending both teams to their halftime locker rooms with the score tied 11-11.

Four Lady Jags combined for eight third-quarter points, but the defense bent enough to allow the Lady Generals to pour in 15 points and build a seven-point lead to start the final quarter. They extended that lead to 30-19 halfway into the frame before the Jaguars roared back with eight unanswered points -- Kennard with three driving baskets and Faust with the fourth. The score remained 30-29 in W-L's favor into the final seconds of the game. Unable to sink another basket, Falls Church was forced to foul with six seconds to go, allowing the Generals to extend the lead with two more free throws.  The Lady Jags never got a chance to launch the game-tying "3" and the game ended with a 32-29 loss for the home team.

The team has only 48 hours to put this game on the back-burner of their collective memory as they prepare for their next game.

Scoring Summary: Sierra Kennard, 12 points; Amari Faust, 8 points; Rasha Benhamida, 4 points; Leah Shaw, 2 points; Mia Pendleton, 2 points; Nyeisha Thompson, 1 point.
